NERVE #13
It’s
very rare to have an ‘alternative’ artist who enjoys robust
Sales
in collected form to still serialise works in a ‘floppy’
Chris
Ware still serialises but in the upscale hardcover format as does Seth with
Pallokaville
and the Hernandez Brothers publish a soft cover every year.
Daniel
Clowes continued publishing Eightball in the ‘floppy’
but
went the ‘Acme’ route of experimental scale and paper stock.
Chester
Brown went straight to hardcover with his latest work.
An
advance from a nurturing publisher is far more attractive than the drip feed of
income
a periodical provides and a little well financed book promotion goes a long way.
So
we thank Mr. Tomine for thinking of us and providing the comic industry with
an
Exclusive
product not to be seen in book stores.

Acclaimed cartoonist Adrian Tomine (New York Drawings, Shortcomings) returns with a dazzling new issue of his two-decade-long comic book series! Optic Nerve #13 features three complete stories, each distinct in their tone and visual style. "Go Owls" is a dark comedy about 12-step programs, drug dealing, and minor league baseball. "Translated, from the Japanese," illustrates the diary of a young Japanese mother, caught between two countries and hovering on the precipice of divorce. "Winter, 2012" is an autobiographical glimpse into Tomine's home life and his ongoing struggles with the modern world. Throughout Optic Nerve #13, Tomine channels contemporary zeitgeist and vernacular to produce flawlessly designed, compellingly readable stories.

DC
DC
July
has had 5 shipping weeks and to avoid a week of sparse releases DC
tends
to use this opportunity to publish Annuals.
Once
avoided by regular readers because of the lazy inventory incubators they became
publishers
are acutely aware that annuals will only be supported if they ‘matter’.
Matter
meaning that they are connected or at least acknowledging and building upon
Story-lines
in the current titles.
So
we have a couple of potential gems from DC.

Scott
Snyder and co-writer Marguerite Bennett bring us a story that is designed to
complement the Batman Year Zero series within the series.
Grant
says ‘I think everyone will hate it’
(I loved it)
(I loved it)
This
series had so much momentum before the New52 but Snyder and Capullo took the
wind out of its Bat sales.
The
Robin 'event' spiked interest that typically dissipated within 6 weeks.
Somehow
it doesn’t feel like the eyes of the world are watching Grant’s corner any
longer.
Me
I’m looking forward to starting back at Batman and Son and savouring the whole

ZERO YEAR DIRECTORS CUT #1
Greg Cupullo pencils minus the inks.
I’m
really interested to see how tight his pencil work is because Miki’s inks are
so delicate that it’s all starting to resemble the precise delineation of Art
Adams. !
COLLIDER #1

Nathan Fox cover graces the latest Vertigo launch.

VERTIGO relaunch continues!
It started small: temporary gravity failures, time reversal loops, entropy reversals. With much fanfare a new government agency was formed with a mandate “to prevent and protect.” Its official title: The Federal Bureau of Physics. Humans, if nothing else, adapt to the changing parameters of their existence. What was extraordinary soon became ordinary, a part of people’s daily lives. They move on and do what people have always done: survive. But even that new status quo is now under threat. Things are getting worse, and it falls to Special Agent Adam Hardy and his FBP team to figure out what’s going on, before it’s too late…
Regular
scribe Layman pens the story.
