SOMETHING NEW

NEW COMICS
FOR WEDNESDAY 7TH AUGUST

TRILLIUM #1
JEFF LEMIRE
WRITER/ARTIST
Only a few new launches this week but a couple show true potential.
I sort of have an issue with the amount of work that name creators commit too.
Nobody wants to turn work down and unfortunately a life in the comics industry offers little to no job security so make wage while the sun shines.
The big two will throw as much work your way all the while you have a dusting of critically acclaimed stardust.
Marvel and DC do not manage a creators career, they want to ride upon the trail of stardust all the way to the bank regardless of 7 day working weeks and sleepless nights.
Jeff Lemire is currently the regular scribe on Justice League Dark, Animal Man, Green Arrow & current co-writer of Constantine.
You can have a fix of Jeff every week or thereabouts.
So why support another book?
Hey this is the man who wrote and drew Sweet Tooth!
I hope we eventually get an omnibus, on newsprint at an affordable price point so we can hand sell this title to all who are willing to listen to our evangelical spiel about a boy with Antlers and his friend Jepperd.
Ok perhaps you've been let down by his recent works.
Jeff’s DCU work is a mixed bag, Animal Man launched strong but the tangle of the Red story-line and it’s glacial pace led to a reader bleed it’s never recovered from.
Justice League Dark may be an artistic triumph, with the remarkably dependable Mikel Janin
providing art but Pete Miligans Vertigo latchkey kids never really gained traction. By the time Jeff moved in, interest and eyes where elsewhere and it’s participation in the current DC event Trinity only alienates the curious.
I understand the apathy towards Green Arrow, because although this book is one of the most visually inventive books coming from DC, perhaps second only to Batwoman, the character in print form has lost his mojo.
It’s funny that the digital first Injustice book is giving us a version of the character far closer to the Emerald Archer of old. You just can’t re-launch a book 3 times in under 18 months and expect anyone to care regardless of the success of an abs&edgy TV show.
The current DCU offers up a far more conservative landscape without the abrasive Grell Era Queen.
The sublime work over at Marvel on Hawkeye leads me to suspect that loyalists to that title can only burn one candle at a time for a boy with a bow.
You may feel disenchanted with his DCU work but Jeff published his post apocalyptic masterpiece
Sweet Tooth through DC Vertigo and for that fact alone Trillium may well deserve your £2.10.
He is a creator whose work on Essex County, The Invisible Man and Underwater welder proved that given the freedom he will give you worlds with a brush stroke.
Yes it’s a loose style but it’s immediate and alive and complimented by stories that sink into the brain and root.
And we love us an auteur.
Here’s the official pitch.
It’s the year 3797, and botanist Nika Temsmith is researching a strange species on a remote science station near the outermost rim of colonized space. It’s the year 1921, and renowned English explorer William Pike leads an expedition into the dense jungles of Peru in search of the fabled “Lost Temple of the Incas,” an elusive sanctuary said to have strange healing properties. Two disparate souls separated by thousands of years and hundreds of millions of miles. Yet they will fall in love and, as a result, bring about the end of the universe. Even though reality is unraveling all around them, nothing can pull them apart. This isn’t just a love story; It’s the LAST love story ever told.
Trillium is an 8-issue series that combines rich historical adventure and mind-bending science fiction into a sprawling, unconventional love story by Jeff Lemire (SWEET TOOTH, ESSEX COUNTY GREEN ARROW, ANIMAL MAN).
This amazing miniseries kicks off with 28-pages of story in a flip-book with two covers and two separate but connected stories!

ROBOCOP LAST STAND #1
FRANK MILLER’S VISION FOR ROBOCOP’S FINAL CHAPTER REVEALED!
Oh goodness! Frank Miller, Frank Miller!
Lets just get put something out there 'Holy Terror' Franks last work was an unmitigated sales disaster for Dave's Comics.
Glance upward in our Miller section and witness the initial order virtually intact from 2011.
Here's the thing though as a piece of work it was one of the punchiest examples of the action genre to come out that year, honestly it was and if you feel like giving it a try just use this verbal code '2 left feet'
and its yours for a tenner.
Oh just to discredit myself among the more discerning of you,  as a massive Eisner fan I also enjoyed Franks super wonky movie version of The Spirit, mostly criticized by people who have obviously never actually read the strip.
The spirit of the Spirit is up there in every frame and what a corking double bill alongside Doc Savage Man of Bronze.
Back to the comic in question.
I suppose this is the final part of the Robocop Trilogy and just in time before the remake hits.
Not entirely convinced this will entice the small Miller devotees to plunk down £2.80 but perhaps its a small price to pay for closure.

Frank Miller's incredible screenplay has been brought to life in this hard-hitting Steven Grant (2 GUNS, PUNISHER: CIRCLE OF BLOOD) penned adaptation. With all the brains, guts, and bullets that made the first film an instant classic, this is a comic event not to miss.

The police force has disbanded. The people of Detroit have been evicted from their homes. ED-209's and OCP officers run the streets. With OCP's vision for Delta City well underway, Robocop may be his city's last hope. This is Robocop's last stand, as it was always intended to be.

IMAGE
Wow, now that's a release week!
Great to see such a strong offering from Image who really got pushed aside during
the New52 launch but now look at them.
From where I'm sitting you could pick any of the blue highlighted books
and not be disappointed.
Although Sidekick has yet to prove itself but 'Ten Grand' is doing fine.
Oh it's so difficult to know with JMS, still he is paired with the great Tom Mandrake
who deserves a regular book.
I've got time for Mr Mandrake who has a whiff of the master of 'painting with a pencil' Gene Colan.

Deep breath...
Ten years ago, eccentric millionaire THOMAS WINCHESTER, put on a cowl one day and decided to call himself, well, THE COWL. He wasn’t very imaginative but he was one hell of a crime-fighter.

Not long after starting his career as one of the Good Guys, he encountered BARRY CHASE, then 16, who was able to fly and was nearly invulnerable. In another burst of obviousness, Thomas named his new sidekick FLYBOY, because, well, he was a boy and he could fly.

For three years, they brought peace to Steel City, fighting for truth, justice and some third goal that the Cowl could never quite put his finger on but was sure he’d figure out in time. During that time they were aided by Police Inspector Herbert Moss, the Cowl’s love interest Joan Darling, and the brilliant but delusional inventor Professor Tannenbaum.

They battled such menaces as Terraform, Snakebite, the Wheel, Reaver and the beautiful but deadly Moonstar Twins. During these battles, Flyboy was often the butt of jokes by the criminals they faced, who couldn’t take a kid sidekick as a serious threat. Even the other heroes of Steel City and elsewhere rarely cut him any slack.

Then tragedy struck when the Cowl was apparently assassinated by one of his enemies.

Left alone at the age of 19, Flyboy decided to continue his crime-fighting career, even though Thomas’ will barely gave him enough money to survive, much of the rest going to cat shelters. Worse still, the problems that plagued Barry as the Cowl’s sidekick have not only continued, they have magnified. No one takes him seriously, not the good guys, not the bad guys, nobody.

And that’s where we pick up the story of Barry Chase, aka Flyboy, aka the Sidekick.

Sidekick is the story of Barry’s descent into darkness and madness with a darkly comic edge, a tale that turns the usual superhero topes upside down as it traces Flyboy’s gradual disintegration, fueled by corruption and desperation for approval. His downward spiral slowly drives him to the dark side of the law, where he begins an affair with the Moonglow Twins, who one night whisper something to him that he could never have imagined possible.

The truth of that allegation will give Flyboy something live for..and maybe, just maybe, something to kill for.
