"What made you this way?"
Before Watchmen: Rorschach #1 (DC) by Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo. Don't try to pretend you're not curious...
Also out: Avengers vs. X-Men #10 (Marvel) by Ed Brubaker and Adam Kubert, finds the Avengers getting their asses well-and-truly whooped; so how about Scarlet Witch and Hope joining forces...? There's also a nice cover to Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples's Saga #6 (Image) to mark the arrival to Rocketship Forrest. And after the nasty shock in the last issue you just HAVE to tune in for more: Walking Dead #101 (Image) by Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard.
AND NOW.....
For such a long time Scott Pilgrim was like an underground secret which lent the series an extra layer of cool. That it was small, paperback and black & white tapped into this of course encouraging the association with manga. That was then. Now it has a Hollywood movie and best-seller sales figures behind it - the title can afford to leap off the shelves at the risk of looking (shock!) popular. And so here we are. A new, soon-to-be definitive version: Scott Pilgrim vol. 1 (Oni) by Bryan Lee O'Malley in hardcover and glorious colour. And it is rather glorious. Characters are more distinctive (Romana really stands out now) and pages such as the double-page spread of the gang featuring the line "you won't know what hit you in the slightest!" have a lot more impact. The big kiss has so much flesh on display; the snow at night is more romantic; and the floating hearts jump off the page. Also included are O'Malley's notes, sketches, research photographs and original pitch for the series. Talk about re-igniting a a classic title.
Finally: B.P.R.D. relaunched last year so there's really no excuse to try this classy series, written by Mike Mignola but ploughing it's own field from Hellboy. B.P.R.D. Hell On Earth vol. 3 Russia (Dark Horse) features art from Tyler Crook and a short back-up story illustrated by Duncan Fegredo.
As ever, the full list of releases - and there are always more gems to find - can be found under the tab at the top of the page.
