Weekly Treats! Aya, New Deadwardians, Superman

This week sees the release of the second collected volume of Marguerite Abouet and Clement Oubrerie's Aya series entitled Aya: Love In Yop City (D&Q). A rich, light-hearted soap opera set in 1970's Ivory Coast following the life of a young woman named Aya, this charming and engaging series has won a huge amount of praise over the years as well an award at the Angouleme International Comics Festival.

There's some cracking value in the collection of the 8-issue New Deadwardians (Vertigo) series by Dan Abnett and I.N.J. Culbard. It's a great hook too: Set in post-Victorian where zombies are rife and the upper class have voluntary become vampires as a way of self-protection, Chief Inspector George Suttle of Scotland Yard is called to investigate the technically impossible when the dead body of a vampire is discovered without any apparent cause of death.

Previously available in two volumes, the entire Superman: For Tomorrow (DC) story is collected in just the one book. Written by Brian Azzarello and illustrated by Jim Lee it's one of a handful of Superman stories that have stayed the course to be evergreen seller. Plus Batgirl vol. 2: Knightfall Descends (DC), which includes the expositional #0, arrives in hardcover just as the first volume gets a softcover release.

Everyone loves first issues and this week there' the following: A new line-up, creative team and adjective for Fearless Defenders #1 (Marvel). Comic shop worker chased by a hitman is the (rather troubling) hook for Snapshot #1 of 4 (Image) by Andy Diggle and Jock - the creative behind The Losers. Garth Ennis returns with Red Team #1 (Dynamite) about NYPD's narcotics unit. And finally, give your loved one a gift they really want this Valentines Day - Young Romance: A New 52 Valentine's Day Special #1 (DC).
